Chief Kevin Brooks, a lifelong community member, joined the Fire Department as a Firefighter in 1987 and worked through the ranks. He was elected as the Fire Chief in 1998 by the membership. Chief Brooks holds several State certifications and continues to learn to better himself and the Department on the ever-changing fire service. During his tenure, he has served as the longest-serving chief to date. He has accomplished so many things for the Department. 2001, the first custom cab truck was purchased under Chief Brooks, allowing members to ride as the first crew of 6 to a call. In 2002, Efland completed its first
ISO inspection and received a Class 7 grading. Setting the bar for the county and the County Commissioners required all county departments to start working towards lowering their grade. In 2003, the Department began to run medical calls as medical responders.
In 2010, the Department assumed vehicle extrication as part of our county contract as the local Rescue Squad was closed. Fire Station 2 was built in 2012, improving our response time in our western district. In 2015, all self-contained breathing Apparatuses were upgraded, bringing the Department up to the current NFPA standard. The Department completed another ISO inspection in 2015, and our grade was lowered to an ISO Class 6. In 2020, Fire Station 3 was built, and this allowed us to get everyone in our district on the northern part of our rated fire district. In 2020 we completed another ISO inspection and received an ISO Class 3 rating.
The Fire Department is very lucky to have Kevin, who is very dedicated and ensures the Efland Fire Department is the best-run and most successful in our county.
