Efland Volunteer Fire Department has been a community pillar for over five decades. Established in 1972, this dedicated group of public servants has tirelessly worked to protect and serve the residents of Orange County. Covering areas of Interstate 85 highway to the rural road, Efland covers approximately 36 square miles with a population of over 6000 people in residents. While their behind-the-scenes work often goes unnoticed, their efforts are heroic. From the department’s early days, Efland Fire has been a cornerstone of public safety in this rural area. The department was founded by a group of residents who saw the need for fire protection in a growing community. Since then, they’ve expanded their mission to include emergency medical and rescue services, prioritizing community safety. The unwavering commitment to serving their neighbors has fostered a strong community pride.
At the heart of the Efland Fire Department are its volunteers. Unlike many larger, full-time fire departments, Efland’s firefighters dedicate their time and energy to keeping the community safe. With around 45 volunteers, each member brings their unique skills and training. These volunteers undergo training and certifications, allowing them to respond to various emergencies, from fires to accidents to medical crises. Volunteers are the lifeblood of this fire department. Many firefighters also have other full-time jobs, but they drop everything when the alarm sounds. This selfless service makes volunteer fire departments like Efland’s so special. It’s about the people who genuinely care for their neighbors. We have part-time staffing during the week to assist with the daytime response.
It is not just a fire station; it’s a community hub. The department hosts events, training programs, and outreach efforts to educate the public on fire safety, emergency
preparedness, and first aid. These programs help residents better understand how to prevent emergencies and respond when they occur.
The Efland Fire Department truly reflects what being part of a tight-knit community means. The dedicated volunteers risk their lives to protect the residents of Efland and the surrounding areas. Over the years, you become more than just a firefighter; you become family. And while their work may not always make headlines, it’s a challenging and gratifying job.
The Efland Fire Department meets on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. for those interested in joining the department, becoming a volunteer firefighter, or donating to the cause.
